What is a CRC (German: Sonderforschungsbereich/SFB)?

Collaborative Research Centres (CRC) enable long-term scientific research on an international sophisticated level on interdisciplinary subjects. As a general rule several universities an other research institutions form a network to carry out research on a complex, innovative scientific topic. The German Research Foundation (DFG) has introduced this program with a maximum funding duration of 12 years in 1968. In 2014 about 235 Collaborative Research Centres were funded (Daten zur Entwicklung des Programms PDF).
