Dr. Robert Simon

Field of activity
  • The field of my professional activity includes Millimeter, sub-millimeter (submm), and far-infrared (FIR) observations of star formation in the Interstellar Medium (ISM), Galactic structure and large scale mapping of the Galaxy and the Galactic Center in cooling lines of the ISM, Photon Dominated Regions (PDRs), and Infrared Dark clouds.

Role in the SFB
  • As the co-Principal Investigator of project A5 'The Interstellar Medium and Star Formation in the Galactic Center', I am responsible for the supervision and coordination of systematic large scale mapping observations in submm and FIR cooling lines (in particular using Herschel, NANTEN2, and SOFIA), the data reduction and analysis, and the combination with data from other observatories.
  • In close collaboration with other sub-projects in the SFB, I am participating in the modelling of the chemistry and excitation of the ISM gas as revealed by the observations.
  • As one of the two station managers of the NANTEN2 observatory on the German side, I am responsible for many logistical aspects of running the observatory and the observer schedule.
